Announcing Future OR Handmade Bicycle Show Dates

After a very successful 2011 show in Bend, the OBCA is pleased to announce a multi-year schedule of Oregon Handmade Bicycle Shows throughout the state. This year, the show will return home to Portland, Oregon. In 2013, the show will once again visit Bend and the current plan is to make a new stop in Eugene in 2015.

2012 – Portland, Oregon (October 13-14, 2012)
2013 – Bend, Oregon
2014 – Portland, Oregon
2015 – Eugene, Oregon
2016 – Portland, Oregon

Capricorns reflect what I think is great about bicycles, bicycling, building frames, and the classic media of steel, brass, and silver.
Each frame, fork, and rack is a hand-built piece from me to you, made to the best of my abilities. My goal is to build a bicycle
that you’ll want to ride everyday: the frame providing the armature of that machine, a construction in which no detail goes
unnoticed.

I began building bicycles in the 90′s with Waterford Precision Cycles where I learned the trade from some of the most practiced
builders in the business. From there I moved to Minneapolis for school, and after a 2000-mile ride to Seattle decided to take
up frame building again. Capricorn Bicycles became the culmination of my experience with bicycles and my desire to do work
and be creative by hand.

I now live in Eugene, Oregon to find new roads and trails to explore, and to live someplace for a change with a somewhat mellow
climate.

2011 OR Handmade Bicycle Show rolls into Bend

In just a few days, the OR Handmade Bicycle Show rolls into Bend, Oregon as part of the Day of the Dead Cyclocross Festival. What is the Day of the Dead Cyclocross Festival? A weekend of: Cross Crusade Races (including a Cross Super-D race on Friday), Bike Art Culture, Great Local Beer, and Handmade Bikes. About the Show:

The O.B.C.A. is excited to welcome over 30 builders from Oregon, Washington, California, and Utah to the show hall at GoodLife Brewing. Veterans and new talent will display their work side by side in a celebration of the handmade bicycle. Click here to Preview the Frame Builders on display this year.

Show Info & Tickets:

Saturday, 10/29: 10:00 am to 6:00 pm

Sunday, 10/30: 10:00 am to 5:00 pm

Tickets are $10 at the door. Children 12 & under are free. Advanced tickets can be purchased at a discount thru 10/26: Purchase Advanced Tickets. Event proceeds benefit the Oregon Bicycle Constructors Association – non-profit 501(c)(6).

Oregon Constructors excel at OR Manifest Design Challenge

Congratulations to the framebuilders who participated in the 2011 Oregon Manifest Constructors Design Challenge this weekend. The event challenged builders to design the “Ultimate Utility Bike.” In addition to building the “Ultimate Utility Bike” the bikes were sent out on a 50-mile field test that began in Buxton, Oregon and finished at Chris King Headquarters in NW Portland.

The honor of top design goes to three Portland, Oregon based and O.B.C.A. members.

1. Tony Pereira, Pereira Cycles of Portland, OR

2. Rob Tsunehiro, Tsunehiro Cycles of Portland, OR

3. Chris King, Cielo Cycles of Portland, OR

In addition to the top builder submissions, the University of Oregon won the best “Student Design” category. This team was mentored by OBCA Board President, Dave Levy of Ti Cycles in Portland, OR.

Eric Estlund Discusses the OBCA on The Outspoken Cyclist with Diane Lees

Last week I received a note from Diane Lees, host of the Outspoken Cyclist radio program inviting me to be a guest for her program. The Outspoken Cyclist is a community radio show on WJCU 88.7, a noncommercial FM broadcast station owned and operated by John Carroll University in University Heights, Ohio. The show covers a wide range of topics including fitness, advocacy and industry developments, as well as many stories about and for the average cyclist and casual rider. Diane has been running the show for about a year and has had a great string of guests so far.

On the show we discussed a fairly wide range of topics, most specifically the OBCA and how we work to promote the Oregon frame builder, this years Oregon Handmade Bicycle Show and how Oregon is becoming a hot bed for cycling and bicycle building. We also discussed Winter Bicycles and the work I do to provide my customers with bikes specifically tailored to their bodies and their riding needs.

My very close friend Jeff Bates has a terrible case of skin cancer. Some friends and I put together a drawing for a custom Pereira SS 29er. The bike is complete with top-shelf components donated by our friends at Chris King, Enve, Shimano, Continental and SRAM. Winner also gets round trip airfare to Portland (from anywhere in the conti US) to meet with me for design consult, two dinners at great local restaurants (including Screen Door) and hotel accommodations. I met Jeff working at Wild Rose bike shop in Salt Lake City. We have been riding buddies for years–he absolutely rips on a mountain bike. Jeff helped me get my business started, riding and racing the 2nd (and 23rd and 83rd) bikes that I built, encouraging me to pursue my passion and live my dream.
