Tsunehiro Cycles

Hi, I’m Rob Tsunehiro, founder of Tsunehiro Cycles LLC.  My front door is in SE Portland, and a wonderland of forests, canyons, fields, and mountains lay beyond. Long days in the saddle are my favorite.  They’re brutal and exhilarating, sometimes remote and adventurous.  I can push myself further when I have total trust in my equipment: a bike that fits correctly, steers intuitively, and functions reliably.  Through each detail of its design and craftsmanship, building the bike you can depend on is my priority.

As a teenager I knew I wanted to design bicycles.  I went to school for Mechanical Engineering and focused on materials and product design.  My first job out of college was at Boeing in Seattle, designing fuselage structure for the 777.  Sculpture welding classes in Seattle and a framebuilding course at UBI introduced me to the craft.  When my fiancée was accepted to grad school in Portland, I decided to take the leap.  I entered the welding program at Portland Community College and built frames for friends.  In 2008 Tsunehiro Cycles opened its doors, building TIG welded steel frames for road biking, touring, commuting and cyclocross.  Getting people on bikes that perfectly fit their needs is my passion.

Civilian Bicycle Company

Civilian Bicycle Company logoMy name is Tyson Hart and I’m 6’6″ and I’m a cyclist. That said, production bikes have always and only led to pain and frustration, so I built one for myself. This ignited a passion for crafting a frame as unique as the rider. Few things inspire me as much as the beauty, efficiency and craftsmanship of a well-designed, hand-built bicycle. I build each Civilian frame one-at-a-time in my small shop in Portland, Oregon.

From my days as a teen wrenching in bike shops to competing on the local race circuit to perfecting my craft as a frame builder the bicycle has always meant more to me than simply a way to get from over here to over there. It’s become a part of who I am. This is reflected in every frame.

VULTURE CYCLES

I live in Bend, Oregon. Vulture is my pen name, generated by habits and tendencies, and I love how vultures glide and soar with such grace. When I build bicycle frames and forks, and when you ride my bicycle frames and forks there should be that same grace. Deserts are next to forests for me and zillions of acres of open land cause a sensation of freedom, wide open exploration and elbow room. I make my bicycle frames and forks as dang straight and strong as I can, if I am lucky I will continue to do so until it is time for the vultures to grub me down. Dirt and gravel and loam are my specialties but I have no fear of macadam, pavement, asphalt, concrete or that cool steel bridge at the end of the Willamette. Fillet brazed from ’96 to ’99 and lots of TIG welding since, but an occasional fillet or lug end up here or there. Mostly I choose welding because I’ve had jobs building airplane frames and race car stuff so…practice makes perfect. Come on over to my zone by the Deschutes some time, its a great place to take a vacation and ride your bike I would enjoy the visit.
cheers, Wade

Oregon Handmade Bicycle Show 2010

Oregon Handmade Bicycle Show to feature handmade bicycles, their builders, and educational programming for professionals and the public

Portland, Ore: Handmade bicycles and bicycle related crafts, the artisans that build them and professionals representing the craft and culture of bicycling will converge at the 3rd annual Oregon Handmade Bicycle Show October 8–10, 2010 in Portland, Oregon.

The 2010 show promises some of the country’s finest bicycles and related artisanal bicycle products. This year, it will expand to include educational programming for the professional and the public. Oregon’s own United Bicycle Institute will host seminars and continuing education that tie together bicycling’s professional community and the bicycle rider.

“Oregon handmade bicycles and their builders have been attracting the attention of people throughout the United States for many years,” said Dave Levy, President of the Oregon Bicycle Constructors Association, sponsor of the show. “The show has grown substantially as more and more enthusiasts learn the unique benefits and beauty of the Oregon handmade bicycle”

Plans for Oregon’s premier event showcasing the handmade bicycle are still in development, but will include the anticipated two-day show in the Bison Building, seminars on bicycle fit, continuing educational programs for the bicycle professional, entertainment and socializing.

“We know that visitors to the Oregon Handmade Bicycle Show love to see the latest frames, components, gear and clothing,” said Levy. “But, they love to ride a bicycle even more. We think United Bicycle Institute programming along with opportunities to meet builders and see their work will build a bridge between the Oregon bicycle and the rider.”

Full details for this year’s show will be available at OregonHandmadeBicycleShow.com. Exhibitor applications, sponsorship opportunities and ticket information will be available in May. For immediate inquiries, show@oregonframebuilders.org.

The Oregon Bicycle Constructors Association, a non-profit membership benefit organization, promotes the Oregon handmade bicycle through support of Oregon-based bicycle frame builders.

Vertigo Cycles Helps Develop New Headset Solution

Press Release from Cane Creek Cycling Components:

Citing the need for a headset solution that would facilitate the use of a tapered steerer fork (1.5” to 1-1/8”) in a standard ZeroStack™ head-tube, Sean Chaney, owner of Vertigo Cycles, a custom frame builder from Portland, Oregon approached Cane Creek with a brilliant, simple headset idea.

“After hearing from David Turner and then speaking with Sean, I was so excited by the problem-solving nature of his headset solution and it’s far reaching implications for both new and old bicycles using the ZeroStack™ standard that I produced a technical drawing the same day,” says Josh Coaplen, Cane Creek Director of Research & Development. “The headset bottom is simply a 1.5” traditional with a 44mm diameter insertion sleeve that fits a frame using the ZeroStack™ standard.”

Two models, addressing different price levels, of the Sean Chaney inspired XX 44mm Traditional bottom headset assembly will be available mid-summer 2010 from Cane Creek. A high-end version will be produced at Cane Creek’s Fletcher, NC facility and will have features similar to the brand’s 110 XX headset.
